Excellent site, but how many people know that's a BSA/Triumph wheel in the background? Sorry, couldn't resist....seriously, good work!
From Sheldon: My web designer isn't a motorcyclist. By the time he had it done it looked so good I didn't want to pay to have him change it. Some day I will pull a Russian wheel in there. What is really funny is that when he did the Excelsior-Henderson site for me all the photos, other than the ones I had sent him, were of Harleys. I had to jump in and make some quick changes on that one.

Very impressed with this magic new web-site. We don't have anything like this in Wesleydale. We drive on the left over here you know, much more sensible provided most of the traffic does the same. Finally our Russian friends are making a sidecar with the cut out on the left hand side. Luxury for poor old Grommit, isn't it lad! Seriously though, great site - keep it up. We Russian owners are better supported than any others - and we have more fun thanks to guys like you.
From Sheldon: I'm really impressed that folks as famous as
Wallace & Grommit found the time to stop by here. They are some of the most
famous folks in the sidecar world. Check out their official web site at:

Own a 1993 Dnepr with leading link front end... currently running a Ural tranny, as we had the original tranny modified to bolt to a BMW R75/5 engine for use some time in the future. We bought the bike the 1049 km on the speedo and a broken rod, cylinder, piston, stc and With the help of RAM Co we were able to to get all parts to rebuild the engine. Ekert Schultz in Ontario modified the oil pump and sump for higher oil volume and which eliminated oil starvation on steep inclines. Although we have never install the units we bought several Rita electronic ignitions in UK and have them on hand for future. Buchanans USA were able to match spokes since we seemed to be constantly breaking those on the rear wheel.

I'm out looking for my first motorcycle and I'm trying to get as much detailed information about the Ural Tourist. Does anyone think that the Ural is reliable enough to be a good daily driver? I don't think I could afford many days without reliable transportation. Any speculation on how the 99's will perform? The reliability issue is really all that stands between me and the bike. The web site has been a great resource and I hope to hear from some folks soon.

Just read about the Bonneville record attempt. Think it's basically a good idea, especially if you fit round wheels to the bike (the one I rode had oval ones). Will it have a sidecar body, or just an empty frame? If rules say there has to be a body, does it have to be the stock one (aerodynamic disaster)? Otherwise I'd recommend using the drop tank off an old F-86 fighter aircraft. I use it on my 22-bhp Nimbus outfit, where its lack of wind resistance is very important. The 12' long tank is probably optimized for speeds around 650 mph, so it should work for for your land speed record too.

Sheldon, Did you get your PT Cruiser yet? Got mine 2 weeks ago. With my Ural in the drive next to it, it looks like the Thirty's are back again. The delay factor is even more pronounced. I'm off to the Hack fest in Lexington on Thursday. Hope the weather clears up.
From Sheldon: Nope, cancelled my order when I was told that I would probably not get mine before October. I didn't want to get a new car with winter coming on here in Duluth Minnesota. Hate subjecting it to road salt, slush, snow, cold and all that in my first few months of driving. So instead I flew to Ft. Myers Florida to pick up a rare 1979 Corvette Spotswagon. Check out that story at: http://www.narma.org/corvette It was certainly a misadventure.

And one more thing. Guys don't sell the Carburetor Crossover Manifold Balance kit for Russian Federation Carbs. It doesn't work. You'd better use Bing, Keihin or Dell'Orto carburators. With these ones engine feels MUCH better.

Very interesting Site. This GO-Translator is very funny. Try to translate a german text in english. That's enter- tainment. I'm an Ural-driver since 1995.I Think it's a very special way of driving. After a total enginebreakdown in May 95 (after 2000 Km ) I made 22000 Km without any serious Prob- lems. These Russians are not perfekt but they are better than they are called to be.

Folks have been asking, via the "contact us" form, what happened to the Ural America web site. Apparently the ISP that hosted it went out of business. Ural America is alive and well, but their web site is temorarily down. A new one will be up soon.
The Discussion group is still functioning though as it was hosted on a different server. To get to it please go to: http://consumersinterest.com:8080/~Ural/login

Hi there,I saw your site while browsing for sidecar related sites. I have an MZ250/1 with Superelastic sidecar.I bought it in Ireland in 1979. It has been fairly reliable although it goes through rear tires every 4.5 thousand miles or so.This year it will be 22 years old and still going strong. So if you see an oily 2 stroke bombing along it will probably be me. PS I get about 60 miles to the gallon

Hello, My buddy had a Ural hack, (1998), and I rode it a few times. The last time I rode it, I got the hang of it. I have a 1956 BMW R69, my first bike I got at age 16...still have it at age 44. It has a real low first gear. So...it's screaming sidecar. I picked up an old(new?) 1992, Dnepr sidecar. Now what? First thing is to paint the car black,(it's army green). It has a brake, with a cable....must figure a way to hook it up. Looking for tips on getting Dnepr parts and information. I bet some folks in NARMA will help me out with advice. Look forward to being a member. Thanks, Rick Randall

The Ural is on a roll in the UK at the moment, I'm upgrading to a 650cc Red Star. Basically the same as the last 30 years, but finished on a separate line in the factory to "export" standards ):->
Good to see another Ural site. I'm looking for 60/70/80's articles - can anyone help. There are no books I can find in the UK covering the models/years.
You can find todays UK models at - http://www.uralmoto.com/bikes.html

Imagine finding a website containing the names of over a hundred people with the same bad taste as I have exhibited for nearly a quarter of a century.... In 1976, I bought Natasha (named, of course after Boris's sexy but somewhat incompetent sidekick) Natasha Was created in 1974 probably at 5 pm on a Friday AT the end of the month to fulfill the production quota. It took Me A year or so to get her running properly...this involved putting a set of Mikuni carbs and converting the electrics to VW 6volts inc. the regulator. I drove her for 17 years and it was the absolute most fun I could have without getting arrested. She now sits in my garage..old age i guess and lack of time. I acquired 2 extra bikes for parts and all of the factory tools sent to the original dealer. What a collection...pullers,valve tools, bearing punches etc etc. If it is not common knowledge about how the Urals come to Canada in the 70's I'll try to find an article i might still have. It was pretty crazy.Oh God...I feel a stirring in me to get the tools and get to work...This could be the beginning of the long slippery slope.....safe riding

Greetings, just acquired a 95 w/ hack, 1500 miles on the clock. Figured it would look good sitting next to my 95 Enfield Bullet 500 standard w/ 5,500 km (lol). Delightfully quirky and unrefined is my first impression. Seems that the previous owner ran it with the enrichener valves full open on a regular basis. A new set of plugs added quite a bit to the startability of the machine. I made a promise to myself to ride to Laconia this year for Bike week (rather than truck in a load of bikes and parts for resale). Perhaps this is the machine. I'm always up for a challenge!

Hi, I have had this 1966 Sachs for about 4 years and finally got most of it restored, with a couple of parts I need to track down, it was given to me by friends in Northern Ca. and I hauled it here when we moved about 2 years ago finally found this web site throuth a freind who was quite impressed with the photos I had of the bike and he really was the one who came across this web site, anyway I have a copy of the sales literature sheet on the bike and also apparently, It is a Hercules style in which Joe Berliner put the Earles style front end on the Hercules Bike and also has a 125 Sachs engine on it which is clean as A whistle, I had it up and runing after redoing the frame up restoration and haven't even ran it yet because the gas valve was leaking like a sive, so I really haven't had much time to work on it since getting this job where I am working 6 days a week, If you have any info or even might know who I could get a hold of who might I sure would appreciate it very much. Sincerely, Sandy billnsandy@theriver.com

Just got back from the 3rd annual "Spring in the South" Rally in Abbeville SC. Had a great time and met lots of guys I had e-mailed here and there about our favorite hobby. The guys at Cheek Cycle, The Siberian Speed Team, and ol Steve Jackson deserve thanks for a warm Ural welcome to me and my old Dnepr! I think we like all the big Russian machines, there isn't much of a Ford vs. Chevy mentality when it comes to cool bikes. I look forward to riding with my new buds on 3 wheels. Hope to see all you guys again soon.

I have a 1997 Ural with a 75/7 BMW motor and gas tank. I love it! Does anyone out there in radio land have any idea of how to make an oil filter change without taking off sidecar, removing the front motor mount bolt, and lowering the motor? The right side of the frame covers the oil filter cover.

we just brought 2 izhmash planata's and 1 springbok enduro from our local warehouse here in psl, florida. kalashnikov usa.we have been riding the motorcycles since jan.2001,we enjoy them and they draw a crowd were ever we go.last week we went on vacation to daytona beach and stopped by the harley davidson dealer in daytona and everyone from the manager to mechanic's rode the motorcycles and loved them.from there we went to tampa/st.pete and entered them in the monthly bike contest at biff's biker bar and won most popular trophy.i was shocked when the bike's beat out the more expensive motorcycles. becky and i i paid only $500.00 for the two planata's in the crate but we had to put them together ourselfs, which only took 4 hours per bike.we love to hear from other riders and will send pictures of the bikes. the local dearler got 32 bikes in this year and my best friends got 2 jupters each ,also i hope they get more and any spare parts to maintain them as well thanks ben, becky bagley..

Great web site, very helpful as I have just purchased a Dnepr & part of a sidecar setup, so the photo's tech tips are great.
I am in the process of converting the sidecar to the lefthand side so it can be riden on our roads.
There is no dealer in Aust, They have all closed shop, so it does make restortion difficult, finding people with parts is a challenge.
So any advice would be appreicated.

Hi, I'm the owner of an URAL 650 without a sidecar. I just purchase the bike, I't definitly gonna need some attention, as it seems everything is loose on this bike. They recon it's a 1985 model, but to my i recon that it must be some later model, as it first came into South-Africa in the 90's. I'm looking for some specs on this bike, like sparkplug gaps, carb specs, timing specs, valve opening specs ect, as nobody around here even heard of this kind of bike. Will you be able to assist me on this? The bike still got original tyres front and back "made in russia" It only got 8772km on the clock. It have not got a selfstarter, only a kickstarter. My fax no is SOUTH-AFRICA, 018-294-7037 office hours. My e-mail is bosotter@37.com Please send me some info on how to tune this bike, and where can i get some spares from in SOUTH-AFRICA? THANX A MILLION.

I have mount hardware (ball studs) to put on my 1975 R90/6 and the mounts that came with sidecar, but the "recievers" on the sidecar are too large and I wondered if there was supposed to be a sleeve of some kind. Rubber? Anyway, I can take digital pictures and send if necessary. The only marking on the sidecar is a painted on CCCP and a BN. Any help appreciated. Thanks~Mick

What a WONDERFUL website! I am toying with the idea of buying a URAL motorcycle.... I had NO IDEA that the WW2 BMW tradition is still going strong with the URAL and DNEPR models! I have learned a TON! I LOVE this website! I fully expect to have a sidecar hack by next summer! I love the tech tips (I will be needing those, to be sure! :^) ) I love the links, and I look forward to seeing my first URAL in the near future!!!!!
Thanks for a great website! I look forward to learning more from you, and when I buy my sidecar rig next year I will be sure to become a paying member to the NARMA!!
Sincerely,
Raymond Mucha

G'day all Russian bike nuts, I have owned a Ural sidecar outfit for several years and long ago fitted a BMW R90S engine to it taking the bhp from 35 to 70. he biggest problem is only getting about 5,000 km out of the rubber cush drive on the drive shaft due to my 60 year old body not being in complete control of my 19 year old throttle hand. I also have a Moto Guzzi Cali II ('82) which I bought new and now have over 400,00 km (250,000 miles) on it; an 85 Moto Guzzi T5 with sidecar outfit (225,000 km); a Royal Enfield 500cc Bullet with a Globe sidecar; and a BSA B175 Bantam ('71) which my wife rides. The MG Cali is the workhorse but the Ural outfit is the most fun. Being a hybrid, an acknowledgement of origins was needed so I had the tank painted with Cyrrilic characters reading - URAL-BMZ. The Russian script has no "W" so "Z" was used to denote Bayerski Mototsikl Zavod, which is Russian for Bayerische Motoren Werken. Zev Ben-avi

I've received some responses from some NARMA members regarding my decision making on a new Ural/Imz Bavarian Classic. All were positive and seem to like or love their Ural machines. The maintenance issues seem to involve the owner to be more closely checking and adjusting on a regular basis. I think reliability is probably better than old British and Harley, but not quite up to Japanese levels. I had friends who loved their 1960's and 70's Triumphs & Nortons but were always wrenching on them. Valve lash adjustment is the simple old screw and locknut which I'm familiar with. I think I'm well past running the "crap" out of bikes and enjoy a more relaxed, laid-back form of riding. It sounds as if the American importer/distributor is very supportive and the owner group is very helpful to one another. It appears the 750 will be an upgrade not only in power, but in reliability as well. I am thankful for you people giving me information and advice in helping me to make an informed decision. I think Wagner's in Indiana is closer than the Performance Cycle in Ohio. I can't find anyone closer than that to Fostoria. Thanks everyone!!

Hi, Great site, and I just put a Ural sidecar on my old BMW. I used Ural.com for a new 18 inch chrome wheel...even with shipping, it came to 100 bucks less than buying it through local Ural sources. It felt good to support the Russians as they are going through some hard times. They were very helpful and also quick.

Hi Folks, I mentioned getting very nice service ordering parts for my Ural sidecar directly from Russia. I ordered from www.Ural-Spares.com (Not Ural.com, of course.) They were very helpful and I got the parts quickly. I contacted local Ural dealers, who were helpful, but they quoted me prices that were much, much higher than Ural-Spares.com. One dealer told me to go ahead and try Ural-Spares.com, and they worked out great! Now, after 30 years of riding bikes, I am taking my first bike (BMW I got at age 15) into the sidecar world. I have many other bikes, but my first ride on the sidecar rig was fun and a bit scary. I will get better, but it was more fun than scary. Can't wait till spring.

Dear friends,
perhaps you can help: I plan to travel overland from Berlin/Germany to Georgia, Armenia and back. Going back via Turkey and Balkan or by ferry from Turkey to Italy is without problems.
But it seems to be impossible to cross Russian/Georgien borders due to political disharmonies in the Caucasian area. Is there anybody who has any suggestion?
I have good experiences in motor-cycling. I recently "made" Poland, Ukrainia, Moldavia,Albania, Baltic countries and Russia.
Thank you and good bye,

I like your site, and need as much information as possible about the Ural Patrol.
I am thinking about buying one but as of today I have very limited information of the ups, downs and finally, why should I buy one.
This is going to be a very hard riden bike, probably more than 30,000 miles per year, some of which under very bad road conditions (if any road at all...).
Thanks,
Paulo
