Ural - Final Drive Seal Leak
Topic: Final drive seal leak (1 of 12), Read 111 times Conf: Technical From: Phil Bradt ( Date: Sunday, September 20, 1998 11:40 PM I have a '98 tourist with 325 km on the clock. My problem is whenever I ride 15 miles or more, gear oil is forced out on to the rear wheel. A second new seal has just been put in. The first seal change was done by the dealer before he could deliver my bike. (Big time leak after first road test) The second was just replaced by me. My dealer gave me a seal and said it is a common problem. The used seals always look good with good spring tension. All the sealing areas are in perfect shape. The final drive heat does not seem any worse than in the postings. The brake has more than enough clearance. I have been turning wrenches for more than 15 years, 6 years rebuilding all makes of automatics to 2 years at a Ford dealer with everything in between. Enough history.
Question #1: How do you identify the proper final drive oil level? I have been draining and refilling with 110 ml. The level is hard to see!!! I was told by someone that there maybe a fill plug like the tranny one with a dipstick.
Question #2: Does the final drive case have a vent? Most transmissions and final drives, auto and motorcycle, I have worked on have some sort of a vent.

The seals out of Russia are so bad, that they even cast into the casing an oilway to stop excess oil entering the brake drum. There is a hole in the bottom of the seal that lines up with the hole, and you need to check this is clear. This passage then takes a right angle bend to the bottom of the final drive casing. Check that leg as well. That should stop the oil filling up the brake drum, but let it spray all over the back rim, thus avoiding rust!!

I once heard an owner refer to the final drive fluid as "self leveling..."
What he meant by that is the final drive will leak until the proper level is hit. It's human nature (Lord knows I did it often enough) to put an extra "squirt" into the final drive, this bringing on the problem mentioned.
The easiest method of keeping the rear wheel dry is to PRE-MEASURE your hypoid gear oil using one of those fancy 2-cycle mix cones. The final drive uses very little oil, so any other method will result in overfilling.
Once filled, you'll find the correct level is about 7/8" down from the top threads of the fill plug...I use a toothpick to measure it on the road.
As for the vent...nada.
Anyway, get the level right, and your final drive will only occasionally spit oil onto the rim, instead of giving it a "soaker".

When my 95 tourist came up for its first oil change I filled the final drive flush, no leaking. Even after the 2500km service I had no leak with the level with threads. One day I was giving my Nieces rides and wanted to see (show off) how far I could fly the chair. I rode with the wheel up for good 1/8 mi. Since that flying experience the final has leaked, worse at first due to the excess fluid in there. nothing would stop it. Finally I got a old baby bottle with the ml on the side and use this for the measurement of the gear oil. 110ml doesn't look like enough to me but hasn't hurt anything yet. I have to agree I do put an extra squirt in there to compensate for the stuff that sticks to the sides of the bottle. The final still drips out of the drain at the bottom, more on long trips. I'll give it a squirt when I think it has lost enough. Its kinda a feeling, mabey paranoia.

I had a feeling that an unvented drive unit would be a problem child. I look at this way at least parts will remain rust free. Once again thank you for
the input......

No more no less. We use a long tube with and end that fits in the fill hole, with a large magnet to hold it upright, a funnel on top I leave the measuring cup in the funnel do other things while it slowly drains in.

When I was at the Homecoming Loren Tower had the best gizmo I've seen for topping off Ural fluids. If somebody asks nicely, maybe he'll talk about it. Heck, he might even include a picture.

yes Jack any tool that makes maintenance
a finer art interest me.
Loren, if you do not mind sharing a trade secret I would like see the tool you have for the final drives.
Thanks again

Loren-you ought to be ashamed of yourself passing the buck like that. Of course at your age (this is a compliment) you're probably not ashamed of anything.

It works really quickly when you squeeze the bottle and squirt the premixed oil & additive into those small filling holes. Thanks for the idea Loren!
