Hello anyone who is willing to help I am a new Ural owner and I'm very excited about the machine I have a 1995 tourist and had trouble with the third gear slipping out of gear on me so I tried for over 8 hours to adjust the transmission according to the manual but had no luck now I have problems getting it into 1st without pulling up as I push down with my toe . Could some help me or give some good advice it would be much appreciated. I'm very anxious to get riding.

Dear Dana-

Transmission adjustment is a tricky thing, and the book doesn't really do it justice. Soo...we're gonna help you.

First:

The shift pedal and the shift quadrant are separated by a ratchet assembly...This is what allows you to press on the same lever three times to go through four gears. The actual shift indexing is accomplished by a detent ball which "drops" into detents on the shift quadrant. To keep it in third gear, you must adjust the stops so that a shift inusures the detent properly engages.

What makes it tricky is the adjustment is actually on the shift lever side, not on the detent side. This is why you have to put a wrench on the shaft sticking out of the right side of the transmission for adjustment...This shaft is the QUADRANT SHAFT

To adjust:

1. Back out both adjustment screws until three threads are showing.

2. Take the bike for a ride to determine which gear it pops out of, and whether it pops out on an upshift or downshift.

3. Assuming this is a third gear problem on upshift, put the bike in third, and set it where you can rock it back and forth a bit

4. Place a wrench on the quadrant shaft and try to turn it either way. You should be able to feel the quadrant drop into the detent.

5. If the quadrant drops into the detent as you turn the shaft CLOCKWISE, then turn the BOTTOM adjustment screw OUT 1/4 turn. This gives the shifter a skosh more travel.

6. If the quadrant drop into the detent as you turn the shaft COUNTERCLOCKWISE, then turn the BOTTOM adjustment screw IN 1/4 turn. This gives the shifter a skosh less travel.

You may repeat this in the other gears, but indexing the worst-case gear usually takes care of the problem across all gears. If the problem occurs on a downshift, then adjust the TOP adjustment screw instead.

And...one final note:

The design of the transmission lends it to a "press and hold" kind of gearchange. I know a lot of you guys are used to precision Japanese gearboxes which snick into gear with light toe shifts. Toe shifting a URAL box is a surefire way to incur lots of missed shifts, so PRESS the box into gear with your heel, and HOLD the shift for a second to insure the detent and the quadrant actually find each other. You'll be most pleased with the quality of your shifts as a result.

Keep shiftin',

Thanks for the more detailed explanation of the shift adjustment procedure. I had a very similar problem with my 95 Tourist. It kept popping out of third gear then would not shift up or down. Using the instructions in the manual and a little patience I now have it shifting very well. The manual, however, does not mention working from the right side on the quadrant shaft as I recall. Maybe next time it will be easier to adjust.
By the way, the shift problem did not begin on my Tourist until about 6000km, so if you begin experiencing this type of problem, don't get too excited. I was concerned about major transmission failure!
Also I agree with the earlier postings, it runs better as the kilometers pile up.

At about 3500km mine started occasionally popping out of 2nd and 3rd. Popped out of first once on a very steep uphill grade, but second and third happen somewhat frequently. Should I be concerned because it is happening in more than one gear?
